The Design Process

Our design process begins as an idea and is brought to life by hand though a number of intricate processes.   We use the ancient technique of Lost Wax Casting.

First we create our original design or model by hand in silver or through carving a wax model.  Many of our latest designs are done on CAD and printed using 3D technology.  A rubber or latex mold is then made of the original model. For every piece in our collection wax is then injected into the mold and then removed.  The wax replica is assembled into a little tree ready for casting. This is then delicately invested in a flask of silica. Very hot silver in liquid form is poured into the tree and fills all the branches as it melts the wax away. What is left is raw silver casting which looks like the original model but needs extensive cleaning and polishing by hand to create a beautiful shiny finish. 

We then delicately add stones or beadwork as well as Gold and Rose Gold plate the jewellery to create our many unique designs.

What is Tarnish?

We occasionally get messages from customers concerned about black appearing on their jewellery item and questioning the quality of the item. What they don’t perhaps know is that Sterling Silver is naturally prone to tarnish which can be exacerbated by exposure to sulphur found in cleaning and personal care products – even hot spring water!

With time, any sterling silver jewellery piece that is exposed to air will tarnish. Sterling silver is a mixture of metals with at least 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals.
And it is the other metals, usually copper, that oxidise in the air resulting in the build up of a tarnished layer on sterling silver jewellery.

The amount of tarnish that occurs can also be dependent on the skin type and care habits of the wearer.

Here are some tips to prevent your Sterling Silver jewellery from tarnishing and how to clean tarnished jewellery:

It is recommended that you store your jewellery in an airtight container or ziplock bag, ideally together with an anti-tarnish paper strip/tab.

Take your jewellery off when showering, sleeping or doing exercise to avoid exposure to possible contaminants.

Tarnishing is not a manufacturing fault, and can be cleaned using hot water, soap and a soft cloth/old toothbrush to lightly rub/scrub the surface to restore the shine. Rinse in clean hot water, and dry using a soft cloth.

There are also many commercial silver jewellery cleaning cloths and dips available to keep your special items looking their best. Please note that we do not advise using chemical cleaning cloths or chemical dips for gold plated jewellery. Best is to use a soft polishing cloth or even better drop your items off for professional cleaning and re-plating at our studio in Hout Bay.

It’s nothing new that the whole world has been in a pretty chaotic state, a lot of us found ourselves in the most difficult time. Some have lost jobs, lost businesses and others have even lost loved ones.

In the midst of this dark time in the pandemic, Nikki found inspiration. For those of you who don’t know her, she is a business woman, mother and entrepreneur with a passion and drive to make things happen. The pandemic took its toll on her and her business, but through it all she held on and pushed even harder to create new designs and restructure her business. She took the opportunity to move to a new store on the main road in Hout Bay, because she saw the light at the end of the tunnel. “I had to decide if I wanted to fade or create. So I created.”

With a new energy and hope, Nikki decided to share this inspiration and feeling with her local customers in the best possible way she could – she created a beautiful new range dedicated to hope – “Rays of Light”

Inspired by the elements of light, the Rays of Light Collection embraces the radiant beauty around us in all its forms. The Amethyst – February

If you were born in Feburary, many of you may already be well aware that your birthstone is the beautiful Amethyst, which is a variety of Quartz that carries an incredible purple colour that ranges from a blend of deep violet and red to a lighter lilac hue.
